Paring Down

So much has happened in the last week.  I got a new job (yay!) and realized that the long list of things I've been trying to get done is still pretty long, and I'd really like to cross most of these things off before I'm back into 8 hour plus work days.  I received the offer on Monday, so I spent most of the rest of that day figuring out what I could get done, making lists, and running to the store for some supplies.  The rest of the week, I've been making progress.  Why is it that as you are reorganizing, sometimes things look worse before they get better?

One of the things on my list has been reorganizing by closet.  Now my closet is pretty structured already as I've organized it by type of clothing and then color, but I decided I'd like to split it in two and have one section for work things and one for more casual options.  That made me really think about the changes my wardrobe has gone through in the last three years.  After trying to change - adding color, new cuts, etc., lately I've been making a conscious effort to cut down and cut back  That has me focusing on what I feel is my style - pencil skirts and slim cashmere sweaters, statement necklaces, and pointy heels.  All of the items above are things that have made that cut.  And everything is black, grey, white or navy with occasional colorful accessories.  I can't even express how doing this has made me breathe a sigh of relief.  It's so much simpler for me to have a uniform of set pieces to work from.  Do you have a uniform that you go back to time and again?

Don't you just love technology?  For some reason, every time I upload these pictures, onto the blog, they wash out (I'm sure there's a technical term for what's happening here, so if you low it, please share).  And it's only these pictures.  I'm not having any issues with any other pictures, and they look fine on my computer.  It's just after the upload that they wash out.

After what seemed like hours trying to figure it out, I asked the husband to take a look.  He's at a loss too, so wish us luck on trying to figure it out or not have it happen again.  Happy weekend everybody.

Express Yourself with Kleenex Style

Recently when I was walking down the aisle of my grocery store, this box of Kleenex caught my eye.  The first thing that attracted me, frankly, is that it's not a box.  Now I know it is a container and what else are you going to call it but a box, but it's not square.  Somehow I feel like that needs to be capitalized…IT'S NOT SQUARE.  It's not a cube.  What the heck?  Of course the next thing I realized was that it's really pretty as in wow look at that cool thing on my dresser.  What is it?  Why, it's a box of Kleenex.

These are the shelves of my grocery store right now.  Frankly these are not your mother's Kleenex boxes.  When did this start happening?  Little did I know but to celebrate Kleenex’s 90th anniversary, they’re bringing you The Kleenex® Style Studio. It’s a way to discover more of the Kleenex® Brand designs and products you love. And maybe even a few that’ll take you by surprise.  Just click on the link, and you'll be able to see all of the great box designs that are available now and how you can weave them into your room decor.  There's also a fun quiz to test you on how well you know fashion vs box designs.  I have to admit that one of the questions tricked me.

Kleenex actually was invented as a facial tissue to remove makeup, and honestly I use them the most at my vanity.  When I spritz my brushes with cleanser every day, it's a Kleenex that I'm using to wipe off the residue.  So the fact that I can now have a really beautiful box sitting with my playthings on my vanity only makes it better.  The oval box is really handy too because it doesn't add bulk and clutter things up.

To let you join in the celebration, Kleenex is hosting a sweepstakes.  If you click on the link and go to the landing page, just click on "Sweeps" in the upper right hand corner.  Then just click on "Play to Enter," and you could win a trip to NYC and $5000.  Kleenex would also love to hear your feedback in a short survey.   Just follow this link to take the survey.  I would love it if one of you were to win the trip, so please let me know if you join the sweeps and especially if you win.

This post has been sponsored by Kleenex, but I love the brand and have been using it my entire life.

I don't usually jump on the dress for the holiday band wagon, but since I've made a return to the neutrals that make me feel most comfortable, I have been trying to fit in touches of color mixed with my beloved black and grey.  This seems like the perfect outfit for a Valentine's dinner, and I wasn't really trying.  Don't you love it when that happens?

Pixi Soft Focus Fresh Palette Review

If you haven't taken a look at HauteLook for sales, and you are a bargain shopper, you should really take a look.  I've found HauteLook to be really great for sales on beauty products.  It's so rare to find a sale on makeup; you generally have to wait for the twice a year sale at Sephora or earn rewards from places like Ulta to receive a discount on products.  I also occasionally see things pop up at places like Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Ross.  But HauteLook has brands on sale every day.  Last July, I was able to pick up this huge palette from Pixi for only $9.  Now Pixi is not the most expensive brand out there, but in comparison shopping, I would have expected a palette like this to be about $30.

It's hard to judge in these pictures, but this palette is about the size of my head when it is closed.  It's really huge.  Since I had never tried Pixi before, and I had only paid $9, I admit that I didn't expect much from this.  I was so happily surprised.  The 16 eyeshadows in a nice mix of matte and shimmer are hugely pigmented, soft and creamy, and so easy to work with and blend.  I would say that the top three cheek colors in the center are more highlighters than blush, but they are beautiful and blowy.  The cheek color on the lower right is a really great shad for me to use for conturing and bronzing.  I've only used the first lip gloss, which looks pretty mangled in these photos, but it has a nice texture without being sticky.

The palette is no longer available or even shown on Pixi's website, but the Pixi Perfection Makeup Palette in Lit Up Lovely has some very similar colors.  I highly recommend picking something up to try the brand yourself, and I know I'll be definitely trying more of the line.

It's been a whirlwind week around here.  I've been doing quite a few interviews, which is a good thing. Now I'm in a holding pattern seeing if any of them turn into actual contracts.  Husband and I had to go to court in Orange Country one day.  It's not fun being the landlord sometimes.  We fit in a Disneyland day this weekend after realizing that we hadn't actually been inside one of the parks since some time in November (I actually think it was October, but that sounds like an even worse return on investment of our annual passes, so we'll just go with November).  We did go shopping in Downtown Disney for Christmas presents in December, so we did get some value back there.  And today was a huge day, A had her first admissions interview.  We probably won't find out where she's been accepted until early March.  The process continues.

As far as clothes go, I'm doing pretty well on my diet, but nothing noticeable has happened yet.  I had to cave and buy a new pair of jeans, but otherwise, I refuse to buy anything in a larger size.  Enough is enough.  Don't be filled by the specks on the ground.  It's been in the 80s here, and our tree is very confused.  It bloomed about two months early.  We finally hit some cooler weather late last week even getting a very light rain, which we really need.  I hope everyone has a great week.
